“You look done for. Have a drink,” Luke said, handing Robert a glass as he sat back in the Duke’s study. “Having children around is exhausting, eh? Or is it Miss Elliot?”

“Both,” Robert groaned. “We took the boys to visit the Tower today. Other than a swim in the moat, it went rather smoothly.”

“You took the boys to the Tower?” Luke appeared stunned.

“Why? Should I not have done? I did not think it fair to send Miss Elliot alone with them, knowing their repute. Besides, they seem to respond to me.” He shrugged, as if he had not done something completely out of character.

“It must be the military bearing,” Luke guessed. “Then what of Miss Elliot? Is she swooning at your feet, like every other female in London?”

Robert scowled. “Not at all, in actual fact. She does not seem to be aware of me at all—at least not as a man.”

Luke raised his eyebrows as though he doubted it were possible.

Robert lifted his hands. “I am completely serious. She has no feminine wiles. I can speak to her freely. It makes me want to recommend her finishing school far and wide.”

Luke laughed and raised his glass in salute. “I cannot wait to meet Philip’s sister. Meg suggested we invite everyone to a picnic before the Season begins. It will be more comfortable for her if she knows more people, and we can help entertain the boys for an afternoon at least.”

“I am much obliged.” Robert lifted his own glass in salute this time. “I think it an excellent idea. Miss Elliot does not seem too thrilled by the prospect of having a Season. She protested wildly when Aunt Phyllida whisked her away to the modiste. Perhaps she will change her mind when her friends arrive.”

“I am pleased to hear she has friends, though Meg is bringing Amelia out, so she will not feel alone.”

Robert whistled. “Miss Elliot and Lady Amelia in one Season. I do not know if London can handle it.”

“She is as beautiful as that?” Luke questioned.

“Easily, and more besides. Imagine Philip’s charm and handsomeness in a dainty little package with a fiery personality to boot.”

“At least we will be able to sympathize with each other. She sounds much like Amelia with black hair. With the four of us here, hopefully we can keep the scoundrels away. With no dowry to speak of, we will need to keep a close watch.”

“I know all their tricks,” Robert retorted. “Speaking of dowry, I received a note from Thackeray this afternoon. It was the reason I called.” He took a letter from his coat pocket and unfolded the paper.
